Acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, known for his string of box-office successes, delighted fans with exciting news during the unveiling of SCREEN magazine in Mumbai on Friday. While discussing his iconic Munna Bhai franchise, Hirani hinted at the possibility of a third film in the beloved series.

Hirani, the creative mind behind blockbusters like Munna Bhai MBBS, 3 Idiots, PK, and Sanju, revealed that he has been working on several ideas for the next Munna Bhai film. “I have five half-finished scripts,” he shared with the audience. “There’s Munna Bhai LLB, Munna Bhai Chal Base, Munna Bhai Chale Amreeka, and more.” He candidly admitted to struggling with each script, often reaching the halfway point but being unable to push the story forward.

The filmmaker also addressed the challenge of living up to the previous films’ success. “The next instalment has to be better than the last,” Hirani said. However, he now believes he has a “unique idea” for the third film. “Of course, after 100 years of cinema, everything’s been done, but I’m working on something new.”

In his usual light-hearted style, Hirani joked about actor Sanjay Dutt’s eagerness to reprise his role as Munna Bhai. “I think Sanju might show up at my house and threaten me if I don’t finish the next film soon!” he quipped, before reassuring the audience that he is “seriously” considering the project.

Currently, Hirani is busy with a streaming series featuring Vikrant Massey, while his last release was the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dunki in 2023. The director has yet to announce his next film.

The relaunch of SCREEN, India’s first film newspaper since 1951, marks its exciting new digital era.
