Bollywood has once again been caught in the web of deepfake technology. Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has lodged a complaint with Mumbai Police’s Cyber Crime Cell. The video is reportedly circulating political propaganda. The fabricated video comes following Ranveer’s recent appearance in Varanasi, where he walked the ramp for designer Manish Malhotra alongside Kriti Sanon. It is suspected that the deepfake also utilized an AI-synthesized voice impersonating the actor.
Taking to his official Twitter account, Ranveer cautioned his followers to beware of deepfakes. The manipulated clip purportedly depicts an AI-generated version of Ranveer criticizing Prime Minister Modi regarding issues of unemployment and inflation in the country.
Confirming the legal action, Ranveer’s spokesperson told ANI, “Yes, we have filed the police complaint and FIR has been lodged against the handle that was promoting the AI-generated deepfake video of Mr Ranveer Singh.”
In the aftermath of the AI-manipulated video going viral, Ranveer utilized his Instagram stories to caution his 47.2 million followers about the potential risks associated with deepfakes.
Additionally, reports suggest a similar incident involving Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, with another deepfake video showing him endorsing a political party. However, Aamir’s team clarified that he has never endorsed any political party throughout his 35-year career.
