Former US President Barack Obama, known for his much-anticipated annual lists of favorite books, movies and music, has revealed his top movie picks for 2024. Topping the list is the Golden Globe-nominated Indian film ‘All We Imagine As Light’ by director Payal Kapadia.

Obama’s endorsement of the Indo-French production is a proud moment for Indian cinema. Taking to his X handle, he wrote, “Here are a few movies I’d recommend checking out this year.” Among the other films on his list were Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune Part 2’, Edward Berger’s ‘Conclave’, Malcolm Washington’s ‘The Piano Lesson’ and Sean Baker’s ‘Anora’.

Kapadia’s film made history as the first Indian film in 30 years to compete in the main section at the Cannes Film Festival, premiering to widespread acclaim on May 23, 2024. It earned the coveted Grand Prix, placing it alongside cinematic greats. The film has had a phenomenal year, winning critical acclaim and prestigious awards. Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha and Hridhu Haroon, the film explores the intertwined lives of two women—Prabha, a nurse grappling with personal turmoil, and Anu, her young roommate seeking intimacy. Their journey to a serene beach town becomes a poignant exploration of desire and self-discovery.

All We Imagine As Light continued its winning streak, securing the Best International Feature at the Gotham Awards and the New York Film Critics Circle’s Best International prize. It is now in the running for two nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.

The movie has not only dazzled global audiences but also highlighted the talent of Kerala’s finest actors. Obama’s praise cements its position as one of 2024’s most remarkable films, further drawing attention to India’s growing prominence in global cinema.

As art enthusiasts take note of Obama’s recommendations, ‘All We Imagine As Light’ shines as a must-watch masterpiece of the year.
