Making a worldwide release on Thursday and Friday, Avatar: Fire and Ash has set the box office soaring high. With rave reviews, the much-awaited sequel to 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water is also giving stiff competition to Bollywood’s biggest blockbuster of 2025, Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar.
After crossing $100 million at the international box office, James Cameron’s fantasy fiction aims for its weekend total to gross over $350 million. Sparking an uproar in France, it became an instant hit, followed by Germany, Korea, and Mexico. Here’s a look at Avatar: Fire and Ash‘s performance at the Indian box office.
Avatar Fire and Ash collection day 2: Box office update
James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash opened with a powerful Rs 19 crore start on Friday, December 19. According to Sacnilk, the cult movie went on to gross another Rs 22.5 crore, taking the two-day tally on domestic screens beyond the Rs 40 crore mark. Released in six languages, English shows in IMAX 3D remained the most popular.
The industry tracker also reported a 43.21 per cent occupancy in theatres. Evening shows dominated by occupying over 53 per cent seats. While the shows remained limited, there was a surge in Saturday screenings. Across the 254 shows in Mumbai, there was a 32 per cent occupancy rate, while Delhi NCR reported 29 per cent for its 226 shows.
Notable numbers came from Hyderabad, which, according to Sacnilk, had over 52 per cent occupancy. Bengaluru, though, had the second-highest rate with over 51 per cent occupancy. With 119 shows in Chennai, the theatres were nearly full at a 67.75 per cent average.
Avatar Fire and Ash vs Dhurandhar: Box office trend
Aditya Dhar’s mega-starrer Dhurandhar has so far grossed nearly Rs 800 crore ($10 million) worldwide. Making massive waves in India, the spy-thriller neared the Rs 500 crore mark domestically. However, Avatar: Fire and Ash could not match its opening day uproar in India as Dhurandhar had a Rs 28 crore start.
After the second day, Dhurandhar had reached Rs 60 crore, after it rapidly collected Rs 32 crore on its first Saturday.
