After calling lyricist-poet Javed Akhtar ‘ugly as f**k’, singer Lucky Ali clarified what he really meant, and said ‘it was a mistaken communique’ on his part.

On October 20, Lucky Ali’s comment went viral on social media after he took a jibe at veteran screenwriter Javed Akhtar over his purported comment – ‘Don’t become like Muslims. Make them like yourself’ in a widely-circulated clip on social media.

Ali called Akhtar “ugly as f**k”, replying to a social media user who quoted Akhtar making the above comment. The reference of the quote was the resurfaced reel of the writer-poet where he’s talking about the Hindu-Muslim dynamic in the country.

In the clip, Javed Akhtar asks the Hindu community of the country to not be hardliners like the Muslim community, but make them like Hindus instead.

“In ‘Sholay’, there was a scene where Dharmendra hides behind Shiv ji’s murti and speaks, and Hema Malini (thinks) Shiv ji is talking to her. Is it possible to have a scene like that today? No, I will not write a scene (like this today). Were there no Hindus in 1975 (when Sholay released)? Were there no dharmic people? There were. As a matter of fact, I’m on record, I’m not saying it right here. Raju Hirani and I were in Pune in front of a big audience and I said ‘Don’t become like Muslims. Make them like yourself. You are becoming like Muslims’. It’s a tragedy,” Akhtar says in the viral video.

While the legitimacy of the clip couldn’t be independently verified, Lucky Ali’s reply to Javed Akhtar’s quote from the clip has now gone viral.

Here’s what the social media user wrote on X to which Lucky Ali responded:

“Javed Akhtar tells Hindus, “Don’t become like Muslims. Make them like you. Don’t become like Muslims. It’s a tragedy.” West Bengal Urdu Academy was right in withdrawing its invitation to this shameless bigot masquerading as a wise man (sic).”

Replying to the post, Lucky Ali wrote on October 20, “Don’t become like javed akhtar, never original and ugly as fack (sic).”

However, in another X post, on October 22, the singer added to what he actually wanted to say: “What I meant was that arrogance is ugly…. it was a mistaken communique’ on my part…. monsters may have feelings too and I apologise if I hurt anyones monstrosity…….” (sic)

Javed Akhtar on being an atheist

Javed Akhtar who identifies as an atheist but a ‘cultural Muslim’ due to his heritage has been known to express his candid views related to several issues in the country. Recently, Kolkata festival hosted by the West Bengal Urdu Academy where he was scheduled to be the chief guest was cancelled last month following protests by Muslim groups.

Akhtar has earlier told Telegraph online that he gets hate mail from both sides.

“I believe as long as both [(Hindu and Muslim fundamentalists] are abusing me, I am doing something right. My name, Javed Akhtar, has nothing to do with Islam. Both the words are Persian. It is only in India that names are associated with religion,” he told the portal.
