Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reached a divorce settlement, ending one of the most protracted and contentious divorces in Hollywood’s history, Jolie’s attorney confirmed on Monday.
Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, announced the agreement, first reported by People magazine, stating, “More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since then, she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”
While the settlement marks a significant step, it is not finalised until court documents are filed and a judge signs off on the agreement. Pitt’s attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 61, were a Hollywood power couple for 12 years, sharing six children. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 following an alleged incident on a flight where she claims Pitt was abusive toward her and their children, accusations Pitt denies.
Though the couple was declared divorced and legally single in 2019, issues around asset division and child custody prolonged the process. A private judge initially awarded joint custody, but Jolie successfully appealed to have him removed over an undisclosed conflict of interest, forcing the process to restart.
Details of the new agreement remain undisclosed due to the couple’s use of a private judge, a growing trend among celebrities to maintain privacy in legal proceedings. However, aspects of their dispute surfaced in a separate lawsuit Pitt filed, accusing Jolie of breaching an agreement by selling her share of a French winery they co-owned without his consent.
It is unclear if or how the divorce settlement resolves the winery lawsuit.
