Donald Trump is settling in well into his new post as the President of the US and he decided to use his valuable time at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday to talk about how Arnold Schwarzenegger is terrible at getting a TV show’s ratings up. No, this isn’t a joke. It all happened when an event which is meant to begin talks about social and political issues devolved into strange name-calling. Trump recalled how he gave up his spot on The Celebrity Apprentice to run for president, saying, “They hired a big, big movie star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to take my place, and we know how that turned out. The ratings went right down the tubes. It’s been a total disaster. And I wanna just pray, pray for Arnold, if we can, for those ratings.” Trump also talked about his success on TV and how he fired his agent.

The Terminator himself responded to Trump’s joke on Twitter. “Hey Donald, I have a great idea – why don’t we switch jobs? You take over TV, because you’re such an expert in ratings, and I take over your job. And then people can finally sleep comfortably again,” Schwarzenegger said in a video. While White House aides said that Trump’s comments were meant to be a joke, it fell flat on audience who seemed to laugh more out of obligation. After all, Trump follows after Obama, who had mastered the art of mixing serious issues with laugh-out-loud one-liners.

What’s irking many about the joke is that not only did Trump use the forum to talk about his ‘greatness’, but that even the nature of the joke was based on humiliating another person. Some people on Twitter even wondered if the whole stunt was meant to boost the ratings of Celebrity Apprentice. PR stunt or bad jokes – what do you think?
