Jiah Khan’s boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi has received permission from the Bombay High Court to intervene in the petition filed by Rabia Khan, the late star’s mother. In the petition, Rabia had challenged the CBI’s chargesheet, which ruled Jiah’s death as a suicide. The Ghajini actress died on June 3, 2013 and Sooraj was accused of abetting Jiah’s suicide. Rabia had petitioned the High Court last December to form a Special Investigating Team which could monitor the investigation of Jiah’s death. In the petition, she highlighted some of the anomalies of the chargesheet.
In February this year, the court stayed the trial against Sooraj. However, the actor filed an intervention application last month, adding that he should be allowed to have a “free, fair and expeditious trial”. The application further stated that Rabia had withheld information regarding Jiah’s disturbed childhood and her suicidal tendencies, claiming that the actress had tried to kill herself once before when she was younger.
Today, Justices RV More and Shalini Phansalkar Joshi allowed Sooraj’s application. The matter will be posted for hearing next year on January 14. On June 10, 2013, Sooraj had been arrested for abbetting the actress’ suicide, but on July 2, he was released on bail, according to a report in PTI. Jiah had made her debut in Bollywood alongside Amitabh Bachchan in Ram Gopal Verma’s Nishabd in 2007. Although the film didn’t perform well at the box office, Jiah’s talent was noticed immediately. She quickly went on to become a household name after starring with Akshay Kumar in Housefull and Aamir Khan in Ghajini. On June 3, 2013, her body was discovered in her bedroom in her Mumbai residence. According to reports, she committed suicide when her mother and sister were out of the house.
