The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Queensland (UQ), Deborah Terry, along with the Chancellor, Peter Varghese, recently embarked on a visit to India with the purpose of promoting UQ’s scholarships tailored for high-achieving Indian students and engaging with partners in both Delhi and Bangalore. During this visit, the UQ delegation introduced the University of Queensland India High Achievers Scholarship, which provides eligible Indian students enrolling in a variety of full-time programs with a tuition fee reduction equivalent to 20% of the total program fees. To illustrate, a student enrolling in a four-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program could potentially receive a tuition fee reduction of approximately $40,000 AUD (more than Rs 20 lakhs), according to an official release.

UQ claims to be nurturing connections with India to ensure that its research and innovation initiatives bring about substantial change. One of the most effective methods for establishing lasting bonds and fostering a profound appreciation is to have students fully immersed in the educational and cultural experiences of another country, the release mentioned.

“UQ has enjoyed strong academic links with India for more than 50 years, and these uncapped scholarships will offer this opportunity to high performing students in India.” Terry said.

During their visit to India, the UQ delegation engaged in meetings with key stakeholders, including representatives from the education, industry and government sectors. Notable meetings were held with the Australian High Commissioner, the Ministry of Education, the University Grants Commission, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India and the Confederation of Indian Industry, as per the release.

More than 100 students are currently enrolled in the joint PhD programme at the Academy, working together to find solutions to global challenges, ranging from renewable energy technologies to vaccine development and innovative urban planning. Additionally, the UQ delegation renewed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) in Bangalore, reaffirming their commitment to collaborate on various areas of expertise. This collaboration further aims to strengthen the ties between the two institutions and facilitates ongoing research initiatives, it added.
