The union cabinet has approved the creation of a Central Tribal University in Telangana by amending the Central Universities Act, 2009. This decision aligns with the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, which called for a Tribal University in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana after the formation of Telangana, according to an official statement.
The government plans to introduce the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023 in Parliament to amend the Central Universities Act, 2009, in order to establish Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University in Telangana’s Mulugu district. A budget of Rs 889.07 crore will be allocated for the university’s establishment, the statement mentioned.
The new university in Telangana aims to enhance access to higher education, improve its quality and promote tribal art, culture and traditional knowledge systems. It will offer instructional and research facilities to benefit the tribal population while advancing knowledge in these areas. The new university will also create additional capacity and will strive to remove regional imbalances, it added.
There was a delay in the allotment of land for the Central Tribal University in Mulugu district, Telangana. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Mahabubnagar, announced the establishment of the university with a budget of around Rs 900 crore. He also criticised the Telangana government for the land allocation delay, as per the statement.
