Rise in IGNOU enrollments
IGNOU has seen a steady increase in student enrollment, rising from 6.73 lakh in 2018-19 to 7.53 lakh in 2023-24. Over the past six years, the university has introduced many new programmes across certificate, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD levels.
Uma Kanjilal has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of IGNOU. She is the first woman to hold this position since the university was founded in 1985. The announcement was made on July 25, exactly one year after she took over as Acting Vice Chancellor.
Kanjilal has been part of the Open and Distance Learning system for over 36 years and has served in multiple academic and administrative roles at IGNOU. Before becoming Vice Chancellor, she was the Pro Vice Chancellor from March 2021 to July 2024.
