Elon Musk owned social media platform X said that it would take strict action against illegal content on its platform, including child sexual abuse material, by removing such content and permanently suspending accounts of the miscreants.

The platform added that it would work with local governments and law enforcement agencies when required.

MeitY Flags Due Diligence Failures

The move comes amid a notice issued by The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to X, flagging alleged non-compliance with due diligence requirements under the country’s IT Rules, asking for a detailed action report within 72 hours of the complaint.

“We take action against illegal content on X, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by removing it, permanently suspending accounts, and working with local governments and law enforcement as necessary,” X’s Global Government Affairs team said in a post on the microblogging platform.

Musk Warns Against AI-Enabled Harassment

Grok, a product of Musk’s company, xAI has been facing backlash that its image-editing features were being exploited to generate non-consensual and sexualised images, including of women, children and public figures.

The official statement comes after Musk warned users against misusing the tool to create unlawful material.

“Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content,” Musk wrote in the post.

Musk was responding to a post by an X user who was addressing the critism received by Grok.

The user wrote, “Some people are saying Grok is creating inappropriate images. But that’s like blaming a pen for writing something bad. A pen doesn’t decide what gets written. The person holding it does. Grok works the same way. What you get depends a lot on what you put in.”

Meanwhile, MeitY’s letter to X said that the ministry had received repeated representations, including from parliamentary stakeholders, flagging content on the platform that may violate Indian laws on decency and obscenity.

The ministry reminded X that compliance with Indian law is not optional and that intermediary exemptions are conditional on strict adherence to content moderation and takedown obligations.
