A shocking video has gone viral on social media, showing a 30-year-old man attacking his 28-year-old colleague with a cleaver in an office parking lot in Pune, Maharashtra. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, unfolded in the presence of over two dozen bystanders who failed to intervene during the brutal assault.
The one-minute footage, which surface online on Thursday, shows the attacker calmly weilding the cleaver before striking the woman, who is identified as Shubhada Kodare. The video then shows he collapsing on he ground as blood pools around her, while onlookers watch without stepping in to stop the violence.
Reports reveal that while around 20 people witnessed the attack at the BPO where both individuals worked, intervention came only after the assailant discarded the weapon. Some bystanders then subdued him.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many criticising the lack of action from those present and raising concerns about workplace safety, particularly for women.
Why was the woman attacked?
According to The Times of India, Shubhada Kodare was allegedly targeted after refusing to repay money lent to her by the attacker, identified as Krishna Satyanarayan Kanojia, who reportedly claimed she borrowed the funds under false pretenses.
Shubhada succumbed to her injuries later that day at a private hospital. Kanojia has since been arrested, and police are continuing their investigation.
NCW strongly condemns killing of Pune woman
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of the 28-year-old woman and has called for swift and decisive action against the perpetrator. The incident occurred in the parking lot of a company, where the woman was attacked with a cleaver by a colleague, allegedly over a financial dispute. The attack, witnessed by several bystanders who failed to intervene, has sparked outrage over workplace safety for women and bystander apathy.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to Maharashtra’s Director General of Police, Rashmi Shukla, demanding an immediate and thorough investigation. The Commission also directed the state police to file charges against the accused and submit an Action Taken Report, along with a copy of the FIR, within 48 hours.
