Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked by a man during a public hearing at her camp office on Wednesday morning. The incident took place while she was interacting with citizens as part of her weekly ‘Jan Sunwai’. The CM’s medical examination is currently underway.

The man suddenly entered the premises, shouted, slapped the Chief Minister and reportedly hurled abuses at her before a serious scuffle broke out, according to a report by News18 Hindi

The accused has been identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, CNN-News18 reported, citing sources.

Following the incident, additional security personnel were deployed at Gupta’s residence to prevent further disruption during public meetings.

Who is Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya?

Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya is a resident of Rajkot in Gujarat. He was immediately taken into custody by the Delhi Police and is currently being interrogated. Officials confirmed that court-related documents were found in his possession, but his motive behind the attack remains unclear.

The incident took place during Chief Minister Gupta’s weekly ‘Jan Sunwai’ at her residence, a public hearing where citizens raise grievances. Witnesses stated that Sakariya introduced himself, handed over a document, shouted, and then allegedly slapped the CM, pulled her hair, and hurled abuses.

The accused family has said that he had gone to Delhi in connection with the removal of stray dogs.

Delhi Police have reached out to their counterparts in Gujarat to verify the details of Sakariya’s identity and residence.

While eyewitnesses described a physical assault, some Delhi Police sources quoted by IANS claimed a heavy object was thrown at Gupta, causing her to fall. An official police confirmation is still awaited, leading to confusion over the exact sequence of events.

BJP reaction to the attack

BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar told reporters that the attacker, appearing around 35 years old, handed over a paper before launching the assault. He suggested Sakariya’s remarks indicated links to a political party dissatisfied with its position in Delhi, though this remains unverified.

The Chief Minister’s Office quickly released a statement confirming the incident and assuring the public that the accused had been apprehended. “Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked today during a public grievance hearing. The Delhi Police promptly took the accused into custody and are interrogating him,” the statement read.
