Parvesh Verma, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been appointed as the new Deputy Chief Minister. Verma secured a significant victory in the Delhi Assembly Election 2025, defeating AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat. Here’s why Parvesh Verma stands as a strong candidate:
Verma has been closely associated with the BJP for nearly 30 years. He is the son of Sahib Singh Verma, a former Delhi Chief Minister and senior vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Party. His uncle, Azad Singh, was the mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation and has contested elections on a BJP ticket from Mundka. Verma has served as a two-time Member of Parliament from West Delhi and has also represented Mehrauli as an MLA. His political journey began in 2013, when he contested the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections from Mehrauli.
Verma’s election campaign for the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 kicked off in mid-January this year, during which he made several visits to slum areas in the city to understand the issues faced by residents. He consistently highlighted that many areas still lacked access to essential services such as free water and electricity. Verma had boldly stated, “If you’re getting clean water and zero electricity bills, vote for Kejriwal, but if you’re not, vote for the BJP.”
During his campaign, Verma’s supporters were seen chanting, “Delhi ka CM kaisa ho, Parvesh Verma jaisa ho” (meaning ‘our CM should be like Parvesh Verma’). His victory is attributed to his strong promises, including revamping the Yamuna riverfront, creating 50,000 government jobs, achieving a pollution-free Delhi, and providing homes for those living in slums.
Verma also faced accusations from AAP during the campaign, which alleged that he was buying votes by offering Rs 1,100 to women. In response, he defended himself, stating that he was assisting women through his father’s NGO.
With his deep-rooted BJP connections, his impressive electoral record, and his clear vision for Delhi, Parvesh Verma has emerged as one of the top contenders for the Chief Minister’s position.
