A 32-year-old doctor ended his life by jumping off the Sewri-Nhava Sea Link Atal Setu on Monday night. Minutes before taking the tragic step, the reason behind which is still being investigated, he made a phone call to his mother and told her that he would soon be home for dinner, police said. 

Dr Omkar Kavitake, who worked at Sir JJ Hospital in Mumbai, was last seen by a motorist on the bridge, who then alerted the police control room. A search operation has been launched, and police are currently scanning the area.

Mumbai doctor suicide: What has happened?

Dr Kavitake was driving his Honda Amaze when he stopped on the Navi Mumbai-Mumbai stretch of the sea link and crossed over the bridge railing.

After the police control room received an alert, officers from Ulwa Police Station rushed to the spot and found his car, with his iPhone still inside.

The police dialled several numbers from the phone before they identified the owner and subsequently informed Dr Kavitake’s family.

Mumbai doctor’s last call to mother

According to the police, the doctor told his mother that he would soon be home for dinner. However, he then took the tragic step and ended his life by jumping off the bridge. 

“When we checked the phone call details, we found that the doctor last called his mother at 9.11 pm on Monday and told her that he was soon coming home to have dinner…,” said Arjun Rajane, Senior Inspector of the Ulwa police station, as per a report by The Indian Express.

Who is Dr Omkar Kavitake?

Dr Omkar Kavitake, as per his Facebook profile, completed his MBBS from Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals in 2017. He did his MS in General Surgery from Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College, Yavatmal in 2023.

Before joining JJ Hospital, where he worked for six years as a senior resident doctor, he worked at Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital as an ICU resident doctor. He also worked as a medical officer at a subdistrict hospital in Maharashtra’s Roha.

According to HexaHealth, a health-tech platform, Dr Kavitake specialised in general surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and proctology.

He had over eight years of experience and was recommended by 98 per cent of patients, per the platform. 

He also had several memberships. These are the European Society of Regional Anesthesiology, the Academy of Regional Anesthesiology, the All India Difficult Airway Association, and the Indian Resuscitation Council.

According to Dr Dheeraj Maheshwari, Dr Kavitake was on the “verge of becoming a lecturer”. He also served as the general secretary of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors.
