Tech Mahindra, the IT firm, announced on Sunday that it remains in “close contact” with the family of its employee, Amit Gupta, who has been detained by Qatari authorities as part of an ongoing investigation.
Amit Gupta, a Gujarat-based engineer at Tech Mahindra, was reportedly apprehended in Doha on January 1, according to his family in Vadodara. The Indian Embassy in Qatar is also involved, maintaining communication with both the family and Qatari officials.
Tech Mahindra’s response
A spokesperson from Tech Mahindra stated that the company is providing support to Gupta’s family and maintaining “close contact” with them. “We are actively coordinating with authorities in both countries and following the proper legal processes. The well-being of our colleague is our top priority,” the spokesperson told NDTV.
Reason for detention
Gupta is accused of data theft, a charge his family denies, insisting that he is innocent. Gupta’s mother, Pushpa Gupta, claimed, “Amit was detained on January 1 and held for 48 hours without food or water. He was then confined to a room, and it has now been three months since his detention in Doha. The reason for his detention remains unclear.”
She further suggested that someone else in the company might be responsible, and as her son is the country manager, he may have been detained as a result.
Pushpa Gupta mentioned visiting Doha, where she was able to meet her son for just half an hour. She also reached out to Vadodara MP Hemang Joshi, who assured her that he would raise the issue with the government.
