Bidhannagar police filed an FIR on Wednesday against actor-turned-BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty, accusing him of making a provocative speech at a party event in North 24 Parganas district last month.

The complaint, according to police sources, is tied to remarks Chakraborty delivered at a BJP membership drive event on October 27 at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) in Salt Lake. Union Home Minister Amit Shah was present as the party launched its West Bengal leg of the campaign.

“We have started an investigation into the case,” a senior Bidhannagar police officer said, PTI reported.

BJP state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar condemned the FIR as an act of “vendetta politics,” asserting that Chakraborty’s statements were not inflammatory. “There is nothing provocative in his speech. These are nothing but attempts to intimidate him by using police as a political tool,” he said.

Chakraborty, who was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year, reportedly asserted that the “masnad” (throne) of West Bengal would go to the BJP following the 2026 Assembly elections. He urged party workers to resist intimidation tactics aimed at discouraging BJP voters, specifically referencing alleged communal remarks by TMC MLA Humayun Kabir during the previous Lok Sabha elections.

The actor-politician’s comments included a pledge to “do everything” to ensure BJP’s success in the state, rallying booth-level workers to counter any efforts to undermine the party’s voter base. Chakraborty was unavailable for comment on the allegations.
