Twin cyclones, Cyclone ‘Tej’ in the Arabian Sea and Cyclone ‘Hamoon’ in the Bay of Bengal, are in the process of formation. The occurrence of twin cyclones is a rare event, with the last instance happening five years ago in 2018. Cyclone ‘Tej’ is on a trajectory toward the Yemen-Oman coasts.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin, a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal may intensify into a cyclone by Monday evening. Once formed, the second cyclonic storm will be named ‘Hamoon,’ a name designated by Iran. The system is presently positioned in the west-central Bay of Bengal, having moved northeastward on Sunday night. It is currently located around 400 km from Paradip in Odisha and 550 km south-southwest of Digha in West Bengal.
Deep depression over Bay of Bengal intensifies into cyclone ‘Hamoon’
The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has developed into a cyclone as per the IMD’s announcement on Monday evening. This cyclonic storm has been named ‘Hamoon’ by Iran. Over the last six hours, the deep depression moved north at a speed of 14 kmph and intensified into a cyclonic storm.
At 5.30 pm on Monday, the system was located approximately 230 km off the Paradip coast in Odisha, 360 km south of Digha in West Bengal, and 510 km south-southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh.
The IMD predicts it will further strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal in the next 12 hours. This system is expected to make landfall on the Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Chittagong around 12 pm on October 25, characterized as a deep depression.
Region-wise Rainfall Warning
Light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy rainfall over Mizoram and heavy to very rainfall over Tripura is likely on October 24. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over the same region on October 25. Rainfall intensity will decrease on October 26 with light to moderate rainfall at a few places over the region.
Additionally, light to moderate rainfall is likely at many places over south Assam and eastern Meghalaya on October 24-25 with isolated heavy rainfall over south Assam.
On the other hand, light to moderate rainfall is likely in coastal districts of Odisha on October 24, whereas, parts of West Bengal is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall over coastal areas of West Bengal on 24th October.
