The cold wave continues to sweep across several parts of North India with the mercury dipping below 5-10 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted cold wave conditions in the northern states, while parts of southern India are likely to experience extremely heavy showers.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy falls at some places, has been observed over south Tamil Nadu, with isolated heavy rainfall over south Kerala.

According to the latest predictions by IMD, isolated patches of dense to extremely dense fog is likely over Punjab and dense fog over Haryana during the next five days. Similar weather is predicted for Assam and Meghalaya from December 19-21 in the early morning.

IMD informed that the minimum temperatures are currently in the range of 5-10°C over most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and some areas of northwest Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, north Chhattisgarh, and west Bihar. 

IMD’s rainfall warning

  • Light to moderate rainfall is expected at many places in south Tamil Nadu and Kerala & Mahe. Over Lakshadweep, rainfall is predicted at most places on December 19, with a subsequent significant decrease.
  • Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely to persist over south Tamil Nadu on December 19.
  • Isolated very heavy rainfall is expected over south Kerala, with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Lakshadweep on December 19.

Dense fog conditions

  • Dense to very dense fog is highly likely in isolated pockets over Punjab during the next 5 days.
  • Isolated pockets of Haryana are expected to experience dense fog during the next 5 days.
  • Assam and Meghalaya may witness dense fog during the morning hours from December 19-21.

Cold wave conditions

  • A fall in minimum temperatures by about 2°C is likely over many parts of Northwest and Central India during the next 2-3 days, with no significant change thereafter.
  • Cold wave conditions are expected in isolated pockets over Punjab on December 19-20.
  • Minimum temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable over the rest of the country during the next 4-5 days.
  • The cold weather has become more severe in parts of Rajasthan, with the minimum temperature dropping to 3.9 degrees Celsius in Sikar’s Fatehpur. The weather department reported minimum temperatures of 6.4 degrees Celsius, 6.5 degrees Celsius, and 6.8 degrees Celsius in Churu, Sikar, and Alwar, respectively.
