A thick blanket of fog covered parts of Delhi NCR early Wednesday (January 15) morning, reducing visibility to zero on several roads and highways. This follows the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for the capital, warning of dense to very dense fog. In some parts of the region, visibility was near zero, which could disrupt flight and train operations.
At 5:30 am, Delhi recorded a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted a minimum temperature of 9 degrees Celsius for the day, with the maximum expected to reach 19 degrees Celsius. The IMD has also forecasted a generally cloudy sky for Delhi, with light rain or drizzle likely to occur throughout the day.
IMD forecasts wet spell over Northwest India
IMD in its latest weather forecast said that a wet spell over Northwest and adjoining central India on January 15th and 16th, 2025, due to the influence of a fresh Western disturbance. Dense fog conditions are also likely to persist over Northwest India throughout the week, impacting visibility in the region. The IMD also indicated a gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius over Central India and Maharashtra during the next three days, with no significant changes thereafter.
Meanwhile, rainfall and snowfall activity is expected over various parts of the northern and hilly regions. Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad will see isolated to scattered snowfall on January 16, while Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are likely to experience rainfall and snow from January 15 to 17.
IMD predicts rainfall in parts of North India
Isolated rainfall is also predicted over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan between January 16, with thunderstorm activity in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh on January 15. In southern India, light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, is expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on January 18.
