Weather Forecast Live Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala, along with its advancement into most parts of Northeast India. This development is expected to temporarily alleviate the heatwave conditions in northern India, where Delhi recently recorded its highest-ever temperature of 52 degrees Celsius. Despite showers in Delhi and NCR providing temporary relief from the intense heat on Wednesday, the mercury has breached the 45-degree mark today (May 30).

The Rajasthan High Court instructed the state government to compensate the dependents of individuals who died due to the heatwave. The court also emphasized the need to classify heatwaves and cold waves as "national calamities".
Delhi Minister and AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj has alleged that the Health Secretary and the CEO of Delhi Jal Board are on leaves without informing the ministers as the national capital is facing extreme heat conditions. "Delhi is witnessing heatwave conditions right now, it was expected in the weather forecast as well. Two important departments, during such times are the Health and Water Department. Without taking any permission or informing the ministers, the Health Secretary and DJB CEO are on leave. I am also unwell... it is shocking that heads of two important departments have been granted leave without informing ministers." (PTI)
Director of National Zoological Park Sanjeet Kumar says, "...National Zoological Park is fully ready to tackle the heatwave to save our animals as well as the visitors who come to visit the zoo...We have stopped all the winter diet schedules which contain more fat and some ingredients which make them warm. Now, we have shifted to a summer management diet, which includes a more liquid diet as well as all the seasonal fruits and vegetables which contain more water. We are giving cold water to the animals to drink. In their visitor area, all the sprinklers, water ponds have already been repaired and running water has been provided. Coolers have been provided at all the night shelters. The gates have been opened from 12-3 pm...We are releasing animals in batches so that all animals are not overexposed to heat. We are fully prepared with all the life-saving and emergency medicines...For the visitors, we have provided free drinking water with a chiller at various water points. Apart from that, packaged drinking water, lassi, fruit juice and ice creams are being sold at various kiosks…” (ANI)

The scorching temperatures have led to a surge in heat-related illnesses across India. Among these, doctors and health experts are raising concerns about a serious condition known as eye stroke.
An eye stroke is an extremely dangerous and potentially debilitating condition caused by insufficient blood flow to the tissues in the front part of the optic nerve. According to Penn Medicine, an eye stroke can result in sudden loss of vision. (Read More)
Delhi’s Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Monday announced that 26 Delhi government-run hospitals will reserve two beds each for heatstroke patients. Meanwhile, five beds will be reserved at the LNJP Hospital.
- Opt for light, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable materials like cotton to help sweat evaporate
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids regularly, not just when you feel thirsty
- Avoid staying in or leaving anyone, especially children or pets, in closed, parked cars during hot weather
- Refrain from vigorous exercise during the hottest parts of the day
- Avoid alcoholic beverages and drinks with caffeine
- Utilise air conditioning or a fan, wear light and loose-fitting clothing, and keep your skin cool by using a spray bottle, damp sponge, or taking cool showers
A 40-year-old man from Bihar's Darbhanga has died of heat stroke at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital. Employed at a factory manufacturing pipeline fittings, the man was brought to the hospital by his roommate and other factory workers around an hour past midnight on Monday, according to a report by the Indian Express.
Doctors reported that his body temperature had soared above 107 degrees Fahrenheit. It was noted that he was living in a room without a cooler or fan and had developed a very high fever prior to his death. (Read More)
According to IMD, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are very likely in few parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, isolated pockets of Jharkhand, Odisha and heatwave conditions are very likely in few parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, isolated pockets of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh on 30th May, 2024.
In a recent update on X, the India Meteorological Department announced that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are very likely in some areas of Bihar. Meanwhile, heatwave conditions are expected in isolated pockets of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Jharkhand, and Odisha on May 31.
Indicating an early arrival of rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Thursday that the southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala and advanced into most parts of Northeast India as of May 30.
The monsoon has also begun early in some parts of Northeastern India, where it typically arrives between June 2 and 5. Due to the sufficient strength of both the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal branches of the monsoon, simultaneous advancement over the Kerala and eastern India regions has occurred. (Read More)
