On Wednesday, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar reached Tehran to pay condolences and attend the memorial ceremony of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other officials who died in a tragic helicopter crash.

Foreign Minister of Iran Hossein Amir-Abdollahian also died in the helicopter crash on Sunday afternoon.

In Tehran, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar was received by Iranian authorities on his arrival, his office wrote in a post on X.

“VP Dhankhar will attend the official ceremony to pay condolences on the demise of President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister H. Amir-Abdollahian, of Iran,” it added.

On Wednesday morning the Vice President departed for Iran.

Meanwhile, in Iran, thousands of people took to the streets as the funeral ceremony of Raisi began on Friday in the city of Tabriz in the north-western region where the helicopter in which he was travelling crashed on Sunday.

President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have already conveyed their condolences to the Government of Iran.

The Iranian government has announced Wednesday as a public holiday as the funeral was held in Tehran.

On Thursday, the body of Raisi will be buried in his birthplace, Mashhad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday had condoled the demise of the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi acknowledges the contribution of Raisi in strengthening the India-Iran bilateral relationship.
