Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday received a telephone call from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who shared his assessment of his meeting with the President of the United States Donald Trump, in Alaska last week.

While thanking President Putin, Prime Minister underlined India’s consistent position for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue. He reiterated that India supports all efforts in this regard. The two leaders also touched upon a number of issues of bilateral cooperation with a view to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. The two leaders agreed to remain in close touch.

“Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

This comes amid ongoing discussion between the US and Russia to end the Ukraine conflict, for which Trump and Putin recently held a high-level meeting in Alaska.

Trump-Putin’s Alaska Summit

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met as the world watched with bated breath the crucial huddle in Alaska on Friday. The three-hour long meeting concluded with no result on the Ukraine conflict, but both the leaders displayed a positive outlook towards each others.

President Trump, who threatened tariffs, sanctions and actions on Russia if the peace deal is not signed in the meeting, said that they have not been able to do what they came to, but the steps have been taken in the same direction. “There’s no deal till there’s a deal,” Trump said.

After the summit, Trump abandoned the requirement of reaching a ceasefire in order to hold further talks, but backed Putin’s position that negotiations should focus on a long-term settlement instead.

Trump-Zelenskyy-EU leaders’ meeting

Now, another meeting is now scheduled to be held between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House on Monday to discuss how to end Russia’s three-year war in Ukraine. Trump has been calling to end the conflict since his return earlier in January this year. The presence of several European leaders hints at a possible NATO-like security guarantee to Ukraine.

The American and Ukrainian leaders are scheduled to first meet privately, without the European, reported the Associated Press. In a post on social media Sunday night, Trump appeared to shift the burden for ending the war to Zelenskyy, “President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight.”
