United States Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha Vance, the first Indian-American Second Lady, will visit India early next week, and are scheduled to hold key discussions scheduled with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit comes amid global trade tensions triggered by the Trump administration’s escalating tariff policies.

The Vice President’s office confirmed that Vance will be traveling to Italy and India from April 18 to 24. During their India visit, the Second Family, including their children Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel, will tour New Delhi, Jaipur and Agra.

“The Vice President will discuss shared economic and geopolitical priorities with leaders in each country,” his office said in a statement that was released in Delhi by the US embassy. In India, the Vice President will visit New Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra. The Vice President will hold meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” it said.

US Vice President to meet PM Modi on April 21

Vance is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Modi on April 21, with talks expected to cover the full spectrum of India-US bilateral relations, including trade, tariffs, and ongoing negotiations for a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

The upcoming discussions between Vance and Modi are expected to build on momentum from the February summit in Washington, DC, where both sides agreed to advance negotiations on the first phase of the Bilateral Trade Agreement by Fall 2025.

While the visit has official components, sources indicate it will also serve as a semi-private family trip, with engagements at prominent cultural and heritage sites in India.

The visit occurs against a backdrop of rising global concerns over President Trump’s tariff measures, which have led to widespread disruptions in international trade and fears of a looming economic slowdown. Though the US administration announced a 90-day pause on new tariffs for all countries except China, uncertainty continues to ripple through global markets.

US NSA postpones trip to India

Notably, US National Security Adviser Michael Waltz had also planned a trip to India next week, but that visit has been postponed, according to sources familiar with the development.

Before arriving in India, Vance will stop in Rome, where he is expected to hold talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and meet with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, participating in Easter-related ceremonies at the Vatican.

Vance’s India visit follows a recent high-level engagement by US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who met with top Indian officials including PM Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval.
