Sambhal SP Krishan Bishnoi said in a video statement that the victim, Dariyab, a specially-abled man, was first struck on the head with a hammer and then run over by a car.
“The victim was first hit on the head with a hammer and was later run over by a car. His close relatives later filed a rash-driving complaint against unnamed individuals. Four months after the incident, the police filed a Final Report (FR) in the case due to a lack of evidence,” said Bishnoi.
However, the case took a turn when Tata AIA, the life insurance arm of Tata, provided police with a crucial tip-off suggesting foul play related to an insurance scam. Acting on this input, the police reopened and thoroughly reviewed the case.
“The victim, who was unable to walk, was found dead 27 kilometres from his home. When we questioned those who had fallen under suspicion, the truth came to light,” SP Bishnoi stated.
Investigations revealed that two brothers, Hariom and Vinod, had conspired with Pankaj Raghav, an advisor at Axis Max Life Insurance, to fraudulently create multiple life insurance policies in Dariyab’s name throughout 2023. In August 2024, they allegedly hired a criminal named Pratap to murder Dariyab in order to claim the full insurance amount.
The accused had already received Rs 15 lakh in payouts before police uncovered the scam and arrested them.
