A 15-year-old student was detained in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district on Sunday after allegedly posting offensive comments concerning Hindu gods and goddesses on a social media platform, police said.

The detention came in response to accusations made by Mintu Singh, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Singh said that the remarks made by the Class 10 student on social media had provoked strong disapproval from various Hindu organisations.

The incident came to light when screenshots of the student’s comments spread widely across social media channels. This led to a legal complaint against the teenager by BJP leaders and members of Hindu organisations at the Izatnagar police station.

The police have initiated legal proceedings under the Information Technology Act. Subsequently, the 15-year-old was detained and later placed in a juvenile remand home, as confirmed by the police.
