Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday said that the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is not intended to target any particular section but is designed to empower all segments of society.
While addressing the media, CM Dhami highlighted the commitment of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to implement the UCC in the state, and asserted that the UCC’s purpose is inclusive empowerment.
“The purpose of implementing UCC is not to appease any class or to target other classes. It will be applicable for the empowerment of all sections. After its implementation, reservation of any class, marital rights, customs, etc will not be affected,” said CM Dhami.
Dhami said that an extensive consultation process was undertaken for the proposed UCC, and mentioned a government-appointed committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. The committee, over the past one-and-a-half years, sought suggestions from 2.34 lakh people and engaged directly with 20,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds, he said.
“The committee is compiling all these suggestions. After compilation, we will move towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code after completing the remaining formalities,” CM Dhami said.
Referring to Article 44 of the Constitution, which advocates for a UCC for all citizens, Dhami praised the Modi government’s efforts. He expressed the growing nationwide preference for a “double engine” government, with the BJP in power both at the Centre and in various states.
“The central government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is doing a great job,” he said.
CM Dhami expressed his confidence in the BJP’s performance in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh assembly polls on November 17, anticipating a clear majority to maintain the “double-engine” government in the state.
