Days after the Ujjain rape incident, Madhya Pradesh Police have arrested a man accused of filming the rape of a woman on a busy footpath in Ujjain district, officials said Saturday.
The suspect, identified as Mohammad Salim, 42, an autorickshaw driver, was taken into custody on Saturday, according to police officials.
According to Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma teams from the district police, cyber cell, and social media monitoring units were deployed promptly to identify the person responsible for making the video and sharing it online.
“Within a few hours, the teams identified the accused who made the video. The accused has also been found to have a previous criminal record,” Sharma said.
Salim is currently being questioned by the police, who are also examining his mobile phone for further evidence. He has been charged under Sections 72 (disclosure of identity of a victim of certain offences), 77 (capturing or watching a woman engaging in a private act), and 294 (sale of obscene content) of the BNS, Section 67 of the IT Act, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. Salim was arrested for allegedly filming the rape of a woman on a busy footpath in Ujjain district.
The incident took place on Wednesday on a footpath in Koyla Phatak, one of the busiest intersections in Ujjain, which was filmed by a passerby, and although several people witnessed it, no one intervened, police said.
The victim, in her complaint, named Lokesh as the accused. Lokesh was arrested within two hours of the First Information Report (FIR) being filed. Police said Lokesh allegedly promised to marry the woman, made her drink alcohol, and then raped her.
