The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to resume long-pending repair work on Delhi’s Sarita Vihar flyover starting Friday, leading to partial closure of the carriageway until August 8, 2025. The move is expected to affect traffic flow across key routes connecting southeast Delhi with Noida and Faridabad. The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory detailing diversions, restrictions, and alternative routes to help motorists navigate the disruptions.
Repairs resume after delays
The repair project, which first commenced in October 2024, had been put on hold due to rising pollution levels and the enforcement of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the NCR region. Additional delays were caused by the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct during elections and intermittent monsoon weather conditions.
A PWD official explained, “The work had to stop due to elections and environmental restrictions. Fresh clearances have now been obtained, and we’re ready to complete the second phase of repairs.”
This marks the first major overhaul of the Sarita Vihar flyover in 24 years, despite it being a crucial arterial link on Mathura Road, connecting Delhi with parts of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Traffic curbs and advisory
The carriageway from Badarpur to Ashram will remain shut for the next two weeks. In anticipation of increased congestion, the traffic police have deployed 50 additional personnel on-site to manage flow and ensure minimal disruption.
Commuters have been warned of potential traffic snarls, especially near Sarita Vihar, New Friends Colony, Okhla, and Govindpuri, with delays stretching up to an hour during peak hours.
Alternative routes for commuters
The Delhi Traffic Police has recommended two alternative routes for those travelling from Badarpur border to Ashram:
- MB Road Diversion: Vehicles can take MB Road to Pul Prahladpur and Lal Kuan, then turn right on Maa Anandmai Marg via Crowne Plaza and Govindpuri, continuing onwards to the Modi Mill flyover to reach Ashram.
- Slip Road Route: Alternatively, motorists can use the slip road next to the Sarita Vihar flyover, turn left towards Okhla, proceed to Crowne Plaza and Govindpuri, then take the right turn for the Modi Mill flyover to access Mathura Road.
In addition, heavy and commercial vehicles have been barred from using the flyover stretch between Badarpur and Sarita Vihar to avoid further congestion.
