Hours after former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Jawahar Sircar submitted his resignation to West Bengal Chief Minister and party leader Mamata Banerjee on Sunday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took a swipe at the TMC, alleging that the party’s “dirt and corruption” as well as its “dictatorial attitude” had been exposed.
Earlier in the day, Sircar announced his decision to resign from the Rajya Sabha and withdraw from politics. He blamed corruption among certain leaders within his party, and the lack of action against them as key reasons for his decision.

Taking it to X, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused the TMC of being “corroded with corruption” and having a “dictatorial attitude”, citing a letter submitted by Sircar to Banerjee.
“TMC means too much corruption. Every institution has been corroded with corruption by the Mamata government. Speaking up about corruption gets you into trouble!” he asserted in his post on X.
According to Poonawalla, the letter reveals that the government’s priority in the Kolkata medic rape-and-murder case was not justice for the daughter, but instead, it was focused on silencing those who raise the issue and heckling them.
“It was an institutional cover up. There is total no-confidence against her as the movement against the incident is a people’s movement, yet TMC leaders abused the protestors and threatened them,” he said in a post on X.
“The only question is how can Mamata Banerjee continue? Should she not resign?” Poonawalla asked, adding, “Instead of resigning, she protects CP Kolkata , Sandip Ghose, and others. Why?” The BJP spokesperson also targeted the Congress, asking why party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are still silent on the trainee doctor’s rape-and-murder case.
“Won’t (they) visit the victim’s parents?” he asked. “From the parents statement and other evidence, it is clear that a huge cover up was done (in the case) at the behest of the top leaders of the TMC,” Poonawalla said.
