The draft electoral roll in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat after Special Intensive Revision (SIR) will be published today by the Election Commission of India (ECI), concluding the mammoth exercise in the southern state. The draft roll will be uploaded on the website of the commission, where voters can check their names. Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik is scheduled to address a press conference in Chennai on Friday afternoon regarding the publication of the integrated draft electoral roll.
The draft roll will have names of deceased, untraceable/absent, permanently shifted, already enrolled and others lists removed from it. The SIR in nine states and three union territories was announced in October, with initially a month given for the enumeration stage.
However, after the news of booth level officers’ deaths and protests over heavy workload, the same was extended twice.
What to expect in the new roll?
The entire basis of the SIR is to remove those who have duplicate entries, died, moved out of the state or are illegal foreign nationals. The draft electoral roll in Tamil Nadu will have the names of voters who are currently in the state, and are Indian citizens.
Previously, the enumeration stage was to end on Dec 4, with draft roll to be published on Dec 11. However, the same was further revised in five states and one UT.
As per the new schedule, the numeration period for Goa, Gujarat, Lakshadweep, Rajasthan and West Bengal ended on Dec 11. The draft Electoral Rolls for Gujarat and Tamil Nadu was scheduled for Dec 19.
The schedule for Kerala was revised earlier and the Enumeration Period for the State of Kerala ended on Thursday and the draft Electoral Roll will be published on Dec 23.
What to do if your name is not in the draft roll?
The revised electoral roll that will come out today would be the draft, and the poll panel will allow a month’s time for voters to file an appeal. Which means if a voter finds that there is some issue with his/her details, or his/her name or name of his/her family or relative is missing from the list – the person can file an objection with the booth level officer, district collector or the CEO’s office.
The appeals can be filed from Dec 19 to Jan 18, 2026. The ECI will hear the cases till Jan 10, and the final roll will be published on Feb 17, 2026.
