In a major announcement, US President Donald Trump said that he has approved 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana’s extradition to India. After meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a presser, Trump said that he was pleased to announce that Rana is “going back to India to face justice”.
“I am pleased to announce that my administration has approved the extradition of one of the plotters [Tahawwur Rana] and one of the very evil people of the world, having to do with the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack to face justice in India,” Trump said at the joint press conference with PM Modi along his side.
It was reported earlier that a team from India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) was to visit the United States to complete the formalities of Tahawwur Rana’s extradition. This action follows the US Supreme Court’s decision to reject a petition filed by Rana, where he challenged his extradition to India. The court’s decision removed a major legal obstacle, allowing Indian authorities to move forward with his case.
Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a businessman of Pakistani origin, was convicted for his involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, which killed at least 164 people. His accomplice, David Headley, had admitted his role and helped with the case against Rana.
