Swaraj Kaushal, husband of the late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj and former Mizoram governor, passed away on Thursday, at the age of 73. The Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on ‘X’ confirmed that his final rites are scheduled to take place today at 4:30 p.m. at the Lodhi Road burial ground.

BJP on X wrote, “The Member of Parliament and State Minister Sushri Bansuri Swaraj ji’s father, Shri Swaraj Kaushal ji, passed away today on 4 December 2025. His last rites will be performed today on 4 December 2025, at 4:30 PM at Lodhi Road Cremation Ground.”

PM Modi’s condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while remembering Swaraj Kaushal, shared his condolences on X. He wrote, “Pained by the passing of Shri Swaraj Kaushal Ji. He distinguished himself as a lawyer and a person who believed in using the legal profession to improve the lives of the underprivileged. He became India’s youngest Governor and left a lasting impression on the people of Mizoram during his gubernatorial tenure. His insights as a Parliamentarian were also noteworthy.”

He added, ” My thoughts are with his daughter Bansuri and the other family members in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”

While mentioning his father’s affection, discipline, simplicity, patriotism, and patience, Bansuri Swaraj wrote, “Your departure has descended upon me as the deepest pain of the heart, but the mind holds onto this belief that you have now reunited with Mother, in the presence of God, in eternal peace. Being your daughter is the greatest pride of my life, and your legacy, your values, and your blessings will be the foundation of every journey ahead.”

Who was Swaraj Kaushal?

Swaraj Kaushal, born on July 12, 1952, was a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court. He was also an alumnus of Delhi University and Punjab University, respectively. After completing his college education, he started practising law. At the age of 34, he was designated as a senior advocate by the Supreme Court of India. He later on became the Governor of Mizoram at the age of 37, serving between 1990 and 1993.

Kaushal also represented Haryana as a member of parliament between 1998 and 2004 as a member of the Haryana Vikas Party. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha during 1998-99 and 2000–2004.

Married to Sushma Swaraj

He married Sushma Swaraj, the late BJP stalwart and former External Affairs Minister, in 1975. Sushma Swaraj passed away on August 6, 2019, following a cardiac arrest at AIIMS Delhi. The couple is survived by their daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, who is a BJP leader and a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.
