Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated new facilities at AIIMS-Kalyani in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district through video conferencing on Tuesday. New facilities include a cardiac laboratory equipped with imaging technology to examine the heart’s chambers and arteries, besides a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine designed to temporarily take over the heart and lung functions during surgeries.
Additionally, a Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra was launched at the facility, providing access to generic medicines.
During the event, BJP MPs Jagannath Sarkar and Shamik Bhattacharya, among other party leaders, attended the inauguration at the AIIMS-Kalyani campus. Earlier in the day, Modi announced development initiatives totaling nearly Rs 12,850 crore and expanded the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme to include all senior citizens aged 70 and older.
This significant focus on health coincided with the ninth Ayurveda Day and birthday of Dhanvantari, the Hindu god of medicine. AIIMS-Kalyani began its clinical work on January 27, 2021, from outpatient consultations in eight specialisations, and began to admit patients to its daycare unit from December 16, 2021.
