In a tragic incident, a 35-year-old man lost his life after being hit by a speeding Mercedes car in southeast Delhi, police said on Sunday, reported PTI. The driver, identified as Pradeep Gautam (45) from Noida, fled the scene but was later apprehended by the police.
The accident occurred near the Bhogal Flyover in the Ashram area as the victim, Rajesh, was on his way to work. According to the victim’s family, Rajesh, a gardener working in Jor Bagh, was riding his cycle from Madanpur Khadar when the car struck him from behind. His cycle was reportedly dragged several metres before coming to a halt.
A senior police officer confirmed that a PCR call was received at Sunlight Colony Police Station around 7 a.m. regarding the fatal accident. Upon arrival, police found Rajesh lying in a pool of blood with his cycle discovered about 150 metres from the accident site. Rajesh was pronounced dead on the spot, and his body has been sent for an autopsy.
The police have registered a case against Gautam under Section 281 (rash driving) and Section 106 (1) (death due to negligent act) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The car, registered to a private company, has been seized, and the investigation is ongoing, including a review of CCTV footage from the area.
Family members of the deceased have expressed their grief and demanded justice. Jeet Lal, the victim’s brother-in-law, stated, “We want strict action against the accused. Locals told us that the car was being driven recklessly, and we also suspect that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.”
Rajesh is survived by his wife and two young sons, aged 12 and 8. His family is also seeking compensation to support them during this difficult time.
As the investigation continues, the community remains in shock over the senseless loss of life in this tragic accident.
