The mother of the deceased woman doctor expressed a mix of relief and continued anguish following the conviction of Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case. Speaking after the trial court’s decision on Saturday, she emphasised that while justice had been partially served with Roy’s conviction, her family would not rest until all those involved in the horrific crime were arrested and punished.
“While it has been proven through biological evidence that Sanjay is guilty, we know he was not alone in this crime. Others are still out there, unpunished. Until they are arrested and convicted, justice hasn’t been delivered,” the victim’s mother told PTI.
The 31-year-old doctor’s family has vowed to continue their fight for full justice. “We will not stop until all the culprits are brought to justice. This case will only be complete when everyone involved in my daughter’s murder is punished. Until that day, we cannot find peace,” she said, visibly determined.
The victim’s father, speaking to reporters, described Roy’s conviction as a “first step” toward justice. “We are grateful to the judge for this decision, but there are other criminals who are still free. Our fight continues until all the guilty are held accountable,” he added.
Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was convicted by the Sealdah court for the rape and murder of the 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar hospital. His arrest came on August 10, 2024, just one day after the woman’s body was discovered in the seminar room of the hospital. Roy was charged under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The case, which sparked nationwide outrage and led to widespread protests, saw Roy convicted 162 days after the crime. The court has scheduled the announcement of the sentencing for Monday, as additional district and sessions judge Anirban Das is set to determine the quantum of punishment.
As the family waits for justice to be fully realized, their quest remains focused on the apprehension and conviction of the remaining perpetrators.
