Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday filed his nomination for the Wayanad seat, set to go to polls in the seond phase of the Lok Sabha elections on April 26. Rahul was flanked by his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Congress leaders as he filed his nomination papers after holding a 2-km-long roadshow in the district.

As per his affidavit filed at the time of filing his nomination, reviewed by Financial Express Online, Rahul owns assets worth Rs 20 crore, an increase of around 28 per cent over the last five years. In his election affidavit filed at the time of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul declared the total worth of his assets at Rs 14.85 crore.

The affidavit further states that Rahul’s stock market investments are worth Rs 4.3 crore. He also holds 1900 equity shares of Rs 100 each in Young Indian valued at Rs 1,90,000 as of March 15, 2024. Rahul’s affidavit shows he has mutual fund deposits of Rs 3.81 crore and investment in sovereign gold bonds valued at Rs 15,21,740.

Rahul has declared Rs 26.25 lakh in his bank account, Rs 55,000 in cash and a total income of Rs 1,02,78,680 (Rs 1.02 crore) during the financial year 2022-23. He has also declared Rs 61,52,426 in his PPF account. He also holds 333.30 grams of gold and other jewellery valued at Rs 4,20,850.

The Wayanad MP’s movable assets grew by 59 per cent to a total value of Rs 9.24 crore, up from Rs 5.8 crore in 2019. His total income, however, fell from Rs 1.2 crore in 2018-19 to Rs 1.02 crore in 2022-23.

Rahul has listed the value of his immovable assets at Rs 11.15 crore. This includes office space in Signature Towers in Gurugram with an estimated value of Rs 9.04 crore, and a farmhouse jointly owned with his sister Priyanka valued at Rs 2.10 crore.

Rahul has no motor vehicle in his name and has liabilities totalled at Rs 49,79,184. Rahul has listed clearing the AISSCE from CBSE in 1989, BA from Rollings College, Florida in 1994 and an M.Phil in Development Studies from Trinity College, University of Cambridge in 1995.

His affidavit shows 18 cases registered against him, including the one where he was convicted by a Gujarat court over the Modi surname remark. The conviction, however, was stayed by the Supreme Court.

Rahul is up against Annie Raja, the CPI(M) candidate from the Wayanad constituency in Kerala. In the 2019 elections, Rahul contested from Wayanad and Amethi and emerged as the winner in the former seat.

It is with great pride and humility that I file my nomination for Lok Sabha 2024 once again from this beautiful land. This election is a fight for the soul of India; it is a fight to preserve our democracy from the forces of hatred, corruption, and injustice that seek to suppress the voice of Bharat Mata. I, along with every member of INDIA, will not rest until this battle is won. We will bring together every citizen from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and from Manipur to Mumbai to strengthen our Union of States,” he posted on X on Wednesday.

Nominations for the second phase of voting in the Lok Sabha elections ends on April 4. Voting will be held on April 26 and the results will be declared on June 4.
