At the invitation of the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Kananaskis in Canada on June 16-17 to participate in the G-7 Summit. This would be Prime Minister’s 6th consecutive participation in the G-7 Summit. At the Summit, Prime Minister will exchange views with leaders of G-7 countries, other invited outreach countries and Heads of International Organisations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues. Prime Minister will also hold several bilateral meetings on the side-lines of the Summit.
This comes after PM Carney faced backlash for inviting PM Modi amid an ongoing investigation of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Drawing flak majorly from the Sikh community, Carney responded that the invitation was extended considering India’s global position and dominance.
India at G7
Since 2014, India has regularly participated in G7 Summits as a guest nation, invited by various host countries to discuss global issues like climate change, economic resilience, and digital transformation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has represented India at multiple summits, reflecting the country’s growing strategic and economic significance. In 2025, Canada’s decision to invite India drew headlines due to recent diplomatic tensions between the two nations over issues involving extremism and allegations related to foreign interference. Despite the strained relations, the invitation signaled the G7’s recognition of India’s global role and the importance of dialogue on shared international challenges.
Modi’s travel to Cyprus, Croatia
As per the press release from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), PM Modi will also be travelling to Croatia and Cyprus between June 15 and 19. Becoming the first ever Indian Prime Minister to visit Croatia, he will hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Plenković and meet the President of Croatia, H.E. Mr. Zoran Milanović. In Cyprus, he will visit Limossol to deepen bilateral ties, strengthening India’s engagement with the Mediterranean.
