Parliament Latest News Today: India’s parliamentary democracy has new home. Just a brisk walk from the Old Parliament is the brand-new Parliament building, which will see the second phase of the Special Session. During his farewell speech at the historic Central Hall, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that as the lawmakers shift to the new building, the dignity and the importance of the old building cannot be forgotten. In presence of all the lawmakers, PM Modi proposed that the Old Parliament building be named as ‘Samvidhan Sadan.’

Towards the end of his speech, PM Modi said that the rich legacy and the importance of the place in the India’s history should never decline. He said that instead of calling it as just ‘old Parliament building’, it should be called as ‘Samvidhan Sadan.’ Later, PM Modi led the leaders towards the new Parliament building in a historic move. Latest reports say that all parliamentarians are being gifted with a bag that contains copy of the Indian Constitution, a coin and a stamp marking the special occasion.

Looking back the journey witnessed by the old Parliament since India’s independence, PM Modi said that since the year 1952, 41 Heads of States from around the globe have addressed the lawmakers in the majestic Central Hall. Over 4,000 laws have been passed in the Old Parliament building in last 70 years, PM Modi added.

The leaders of the Opposition entered the new Parliament building with a copy of the Constitution in their hands. Some government sources have said that the old building will not be demolished rather it will be ‘retrofitted’ to create more functional spaces for parliamentary events. Some parts of the old parliament is reportedly to be converted in to a museum. According to some sources the historic structure (old parliament building) will be conserved because it is an archaeological asset of the country.”
