Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Kailash Makwana on Saturday stated that police alone cannot curb rape incidents. He highlighted the rising numbers of rape cases and attributed reason to societal moral degradation bolstered by availability of pornography via mobile phones and the internet.
Speaking to reporters after a review meeting, DGP Makwana emphasised, “The way pornography is being served on the internet, the minds of children are getting distorted.” He highlighted multiple factors contributing to the increase in sexual offences, including “internet, mobile phones, availability of pornographic material and alcohol.”
He reiterated, “Today, through mobile phones, someone is connecting from somewhere to someone else. There are many such reasons for the decline of morality in society. It is not possible for police alone to deal with it”
Makwana further claimed that, unlike in the past, children no longer listen to teachers and family members, and “today no one is able to keep an eye on each other in a house.” He added, “Now all limits are breaking.”
The DGP emphasised, “The way obscene content is being served on the internet, it is definitely distorting their (children’s) minds. This is the reason why these incidents are happening,”.
The DGP’s comments come amidst concerning statistics from the state. During the last session of the Madhya Pradesh assembly, the government informed that an average of 20 rape cases were registered daily in 2024. Data from the state home department reveals a 19 percent increase in rape cases, rising from 6,134 in 2020 to 7,294 in 2024.
