Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday announced that three metro stations – one existing and two upcoming – have been renamed to make travel easier for passengers and give the areas a clearer identity. The announcement was shared by the CM on X (formerly Twitter).
“We have considered the suggestions from citizens and party leaders and to make commuting easier, these names have been changed. Our goal is to ensure that everyone can travel without any difficulties,” CM Gupta told reporters.
Details of the renamed stations
The proposed North Pitampura Metro Station in the QU Block area will now be called “North Pitampura-Prashant Vihar Metro Station.” The proposed Pitampura North Metro Station has been renamed “Haiderpur Village Metro Station,” while the existing Pitampura Metro Station will now be known as “Madhuban Chowk Metro Station.”
She said the changes aim to provide clarity for commuters and ensure station names match the neighbourhoods they serve.
“For the convenience of passengers and to clearly define the local identity, the proposed North Pitampura station in QU Block will now be named ‘North Pitampura-Prashant Vihar Metro Station.’ The proposed Pitampura North Metro Station will be named ‘Haiderpur Village Metro Station.’ The current Pitampura Metro Station will be named ‘Madhuban Chowk Metro Station,” CM Gupta wrote.
Renaming stations is not new for Delhi Metro. In July 2023, HUDA City Centre was renamed Millennium City Centre at the request of both central and state governments, reflecting the Millennium City tag. An official said, “A name change process requires the state government to go through the State Names Authority (SNA).”
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is building around 112 kilometres of new metro lines as part of Phase 4 expansion. Two priority corridors are under construction: RK Ashram Marg–Janakpuri West and Aerocity–Tughlakabad (the new Golden Line). A smaller corridor, Majlis Park–Maujpur (an extension of the Pink Line), is nearly complete. Three more corridors were approved last year and are in the pre-construction stage.
