Tin sheets erected on two sides of Aurangzeb’s tomb

Amid calls for the removal of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Maharashtra’s Sambhajinagar district, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has placed tin sheets on two sides of the 18th-century tomb.

On Wednesday night, tin sheets and wire fencing were installed on two sides of the tomb, according to a local official, reported PTI. A circular fence will also be set up around the tomb.

The official told PTI that the green net covering two sides of the tomb had deteriorated, making the structure visible to visitors at the nearby Khwaja Syed Zainuddin Chishti grave, which led to the installation of the tin sheets.

What triggered violence in Nagpur?

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had held widespread protests on Monday at government offices, demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. In a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the VHP listed Aurangzeb’s actions like killing two sons of Sikh Guru Gobind Singh and destroying temples in Kashi, Mathura, and Somnath. These protests were part of a larger effort to have Aurangzeb’s tomb removed. The protests became violent when two groups clashed, resulting in many injuries.
