Mumbai rains: A heavy downpour soaked Mumbai in the early hours of Monday, flooding streets and disrupting normal life across the city. Between 2 am and 5 am, South Mumbai and the Western suburbs experienced intense rainfall, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for Mumbai and nearby regions including Thane, Palghar, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg for today.
Rainfall figures: South Mumbai hit hardest
According to IMD data, Fort recorded the highest rainfall with 74 mm, followed closely by Bandra (62 mm), Malabar Hill (60 mm), and Lower Parel (58 mm). Other significantly affected areas include Haji Ali (57 mm), Matunga (56 mm), Grant Road and Santacruz (47 mm each), and Dadar (41 mm).
Even areas that typically see less rain like Andheri (33 mm), Mumbai Central (30 mm) and Borivali (28 mm)—weren’t spared. Worli (26 mm), BKC (25 mm), Versova (23 mm) and Dindoshi (22 mm) also witnessed steady showers.
Thane escapes for now, but not for long
While Mumbai remained drenched, neighbouring Thane experienced relatively dry conditions during the same window. However, forecasts indicate that the rains could intensify in Thane shortly, with similar alerts likely to follow.
IMD forecast: Rain to continue this week
The IMD’s seven-day forecast suggests the rain isn’t going away anytime soon.
Today (June 16): Heavy rain, especially over South Mumbai and Western suburbs. An orange alert remains in effect, warning of localised flooding and traffic snarls.
Tomorrow (June 17): Similar weather is expected, with heavy rain and cloudy skies.
From June 18 onwards: Rain will continue intermittently, though no fresh alerts have been issued as of now.
