Speaking over the incident, Chandrakant Kakade, President, Monorail Workers Association, said he got to know about the accident through his sources, who added there was some trouble with the a switch that changes tracks.

“I have got to know that the accident took place due to some glitch in the switch which is used to change the tracks. This was a testing train… it was good that there no passengers otherwise it could have resulted in a big accident,” he told PTI.

“During today’s incident, a trial run was underway with only the train captain and a Medha company staff member on board. A detailed investigation must be conducted to prevent such accidents in the future…” he added.

Monorail accident in August

Earlier in August, a monorail train came to a halt near Mysore Colony station after a power supply issue. According to municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, there were around 200 passengers inside the train. Video of the rescue operation has surfaced on the internet showing stranded passengers being taken out as heavy rain lashes the city.

The incident occurred around 6.15 pm, following which monorail services between Chembur and Bhakti Park were suspended. Passengers onboard the stalled train contacted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s emergency helpline (1916), after which the Mumbai Fire Brigade was rushed to the spot with three snorkel vehicles to assist in relief operations.
