Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud is set to lay the foundation stone for the new Bombay High Court complex in Mumbai’s Bandra East on Monday, according to an official statement.
The Maharashtra government, in a press release issued on Sunday, announced that 30.16 acres of land will be handed over to the Bombay High Court in phases, with the first tranche of 4.39 acres already transferred. The new complex is designed to provide world-class infrastructure, featuring spacious courtrooms, chambers for judges and registry staff, an arbitration and mediation center, an auditorium, and a library. The facility will also offer a range of amenities for staff, lawyers, and litigants.
To enhance accessibility, the complex will include banking and telecom services, medical facilities, a digitization center, creche, cafeteria, waiting areas, and a multi-storey parking lot. Special features have been incorporated into the design to ensure it is accessible for differently-abled individuals.
Strategically located near the Western Express Highway and the Bandra Kurla Complex, one of the country’s major commercial hubs, the new complex will offer easy access to both the island city and the suburbs of Mumbai.
The Bombay High Court, which was founded on August 16, 1862, has been housed in its iconic Flora Fountain building since 1878. It exercises jurisdiction over Maharashtra from its Principal Seat in Mumbai, with additional benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Goa. The court also has jurisdiction over the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
With a sanctioned strength of 94 judges and a current roster of 66 sitting judges, the new complex aims to accommodate the growing needs of the court and its stakeholders, the release added.
