India is set to observe Muharram on either July 6 or July 7, depending on the sighting of the moon, with July 6 currently marked as the tentative date. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, signifies the beginning of the Islamic New Year and holds deep religious importance, especially for Shia Muslims.
Muharram Holiday 2025 : Will Bank School remain closed
On the day of Muharram, central and state government offices, schools, colleges, post offices, and many private institutions across India will remain closed. States with significant Muslim populations—such as Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and West Bengal—are expected to issue official notifications shortly. Parents and students should monitor local school circulars and district announcements for confirmation.
Banks will be closed nationwide on Muharram, disrupting public banking services for the day. Citizens are advised to complete all important transactions in advance to avoid delays or inconveniences.
Stock Markets and Exchanges to Halt Trading
India’s major stock exchanges, including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE), will remain closed on Muharram. This shutdown will impact all trading segments: equities, derivatives, currencies, interest rate futures, and the Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) platform.
The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also remain shut for the morning session but is expected to resume trading in the evening from 5:00 PM to 11:30/11:55 PM.
Religious Significance
Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam. Its 10th day, Ashura, is observed in mourning for Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The day is marked by solemn processions, prayers, and gatherings held in remembrance of the sacrifice.
As India prepares for this solemn occasion, public life is expected to come to a pause, allowing space for religious reflection and observance.
