Today’s weather: As the monsoon strengthens across India, Mumbai and several northern states are experiencing heavy rainfall, prompting weather alerts, traffic disruptions, and even natural calamities. From Maharashtra to Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded varying degrees of warnings, advising people to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
Torrential rains in Mumbai
Mumbai woke up to intense rainfall on Monday, 21 July, with showers continuing through the day. The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for the city, warning of moderate to heavy spells in isolated areas of Mumbai and its suburban districts over the next few hours. The IMD has also forecast continued rain through the week.
A 6:10 am update from the popular X handle ‘Mumbai Rains’ warned, “Areas in central suburbs should be on target as rain bands will move from western suburbs.” Following the downpour, water levels in the city’s lakes surged. According to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on 19 July, Mumbai’s seven reservoirs now hold 81.86% of their total capacity, a substantial 11,84,796 million litres.
Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh brace for weather shift
The heat-stricken residents of Delhi-NCR can expect relief, as the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in the coming days. The capital is likely to experience a maximum temperature around 33°C and a minimum of 27°C. Thunderstorm and lightning warnings have also been issued for parts of western Uttar Pradesh, where an orange alert is now active.
A low-pressure area is developing over the Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to trigger widespread rainfall in Uttar Pradesh from 25 July for at least three to four days.
On Sunday, rainfall was already recorded in multiple UP districts — 25 mm in Varanasi (BHU), 7 mm in Basti, and smaller amounts in Sultanpur and Fursatganj. Temperatures remained high, with Fatehgarh hitting 36.8°C and Prayagraj, Kanpur, and Jhansi exceeding 34°C.
Warnings issued across North India
The weather department has also issued alerts for several other northern states. In Bihar, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms has been forecast for districts including Bodh Gaya, Buxar, Gaya, and Sasaram.
In Uttarakhand, a red alert has been issued for Kumaon, with heavy rainfall expected in Nainital, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar. Tehri, Pauri, and Pithoragarh are also likely to be affected.
