Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, saying he is “frightened” by US President Donald Trump. Gandhi reacted to Trump’s recent claim that India had agreed to stop buying Russian oil. He pointed out that despite disputes with the US over tariffs and India-Pakistan ceasefire issues, Modi continued posting congratulatory messages for Trump on X and maintained a friendly tone in his communications.

Gandhi also said that Modi canceled the Finance Minister’s planned visit to the United States and avoided contradicting Trump on matters such as Operation Sindoor.

What Trump said about India’s Russian oil purchase

Trump claimed on Thursday that he had spoken to PM Modi who had assured him that India will stop buying Russian oil. He mentioned that while the change could not happen immediately, it was a process that would be completed soon. However, the Indian government has not confirmed any such agreement.

Modi’s congratulatory messages to Trump

Modi shared several posts on X congratulating Trump on his initiatives, including the 20-point Gaza peace plan, partial acceptance of the ceasefire by Hamas, and the release of hostages. The PM had also personally called Trump to congratulate him on the success of the Gaza peace efforts.

Despite these interactions, Modi has not publicly denied Trump’s statements regarding India-Pakistan relations, including claims about his role in brokering peace after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
