Anwarul Azim, an MP from Bangladesh’s ruling party, was found dead in Kolkata, West Bengal, on Wednesday. Azim reportedly had been missing since May 18.

The news was confirmed by Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan in Dhaka. At a press conference, Khan said that the MP was killed in Kolkata. Three people have been arrested in this connection.

Anwarul, a member of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League, had come to Kolkata for medical treatment on May 12.

“So far, we have come to know that all the killers involved are Bangladeshis. It was a planned murder,” the Bangladesh Home Minister said. When asked about the whereabouts of the body, he said that they were yet to know about it, reported Bangladesh newspaper Daily Star, according to ANI.

“We will soon inform you about the motive,” the minister said, adding that Indian police are cooperating with the case.

The 56-year-old politician came to Kolkata on May 12 and was staying at the residence of his friend, Gopal Biswas. After he went missing, Biswas filed a complaint with the Kolkata Police.

Anwarul Azim Anar’s family also raised the issue with Sheikh Hasina, and her office informed diplomats in Delhi and Kolkata.
